The Crown Sky Garden is located on the 11th floor of the Children's Hospital of Chicago. It is a paradise for the hospital's patients, family members, doctors and administrators. It is a rehabilitation garden designed based on scientific research, combining natural light, environmentally friendly medical furniture, and meditative medical space with the patient's recovery time. It is a combination of child-centered medical care and a rehabilitation environment.

This sky garden is in a glass greenhouse, which is composed of a series of interactive elements of light, colorful resin walls and locally recycled wood elements. The winding bamboo forest surrounds the linear glass bead fountain, and the glass windows from the floor to the roof are adjacent to the meditative scenery of downtown Chicago. The garden covers a series of individual and collective spaces. Children not only make this garden full of vitality through direct contact and participation, but also play the sound of nature. You can have a rich ecological experience here.

“All the spaces are joyful and artistic. Nothing is more important than that the children like it. Because it is built in a hospital, the choice of healthy materials is particularly important, and the designers are complete experts. The playful colors and materials fascinate the children.”

Wall of Light + Bamboo Forest

The colorful resin wall is made of a series of folded and interlaced ecological resin panels, which gradually change from light green to orange-yellow, creating a flow of color when people move around the wall. In the middle of the garden, LED lights fixed in the center of the wall are carefully choreographed to create an image of water when children activate the sensor, from calm tides to violent colorful bubbles.

Glass marbles and bubbles

Hand-stacked glass spheres are organized in a colorful fashion, creating a dynamic color design that comes alive in the evening light. Two sinuous walls of liquid foam weave through the bamboo forest, filled with water to meet the strict requirements of infection control. This bubble experience creates a sound barrier for the two main gardens’ meditative places.

Sound Reclaimed Wood

Reclaimed wood sculptures are placed throughout the garden room, acting as toys and stools. These local materials were salvaged from Chicago’s historic past, and the wood was repurposed, with layers of resin within each piece being ignited from the inside, creating glowing stools at night.

The small handprints cast in bronze on the recycled wood are sensors that activate the sound of the speakers carved on the recycled wood. Therefore, in this dreamy space, children can safely get in touch with nature.

The above is the design sharing of the Crown Sky Garden of the Chicago Children's Hospital in the United States. It not only meets the needs of children with immune deficiencies, but also provides a diagnosis and treatment space with discovery and innovation. This regeneration project also provides a new paradigm for the design of hospital diagnosis and treatment spaces.
